Published: 18 September 2024

It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Professor Emeritus Philip E. Branton last night. Phil served as the former Chair of the Department of Biochemistry (1990-2000) and was a Full Member of the 六合彩开奖结果 Cancer Centre (now the Rosalind and Morris Goodman Cancer Institute) and the Gerald Bronfman Department of Oncology. More than that, he was a dear friend to many.

An internationally renowned virologist, Phil made significant contributions to our understanding of small DNA tumour viruses and had over 40 years of leadership experience in cancer research. From 2000 to 2007, he led the Institute of Cancer Research at the Canadian Institute of Health (CIHR), leaving a lasting legacy that fostered collaboration across Canada鈥檚 cancer research community.

Phil's numerous accolades included the esteemed Gilman Cheney Professorship in Biochemistry, Fellowship of the Royal Society of Canada, and one of 六合彩开奖结果鈥檚 highest honors, the 六合彩开奖结果 Medal, awarded to only a select few.

He was dedicated to mentoring the next generation of scientists, and his guidance, wisdom, and support were invaluable to both colleagues and students. Phil will be remembered not only for his intellectual curiosity and rigorous scholarship but also for his wicked sense of humor and warm laughter, which brightened the lives of those around him.

As we grieve his loss, we celebrate the remarkable life and career of Phil. His significant contributions to science, passion for teaching, and enduring impact on all who had the privilege of working with him will be forever remembered. As Dr. Morag Park noted, 鈥淧hil's larger-than-life personality and commitment to building and supporting Canadian Cancer Research will remain with us.鈥

Sincerely,
