The children鈥檚 rhyme says 鈥渟ticks and stones may break your bones,鈥 but did you know that bones and teeth themselves are composed of sticks and stones? Nanometre-sized mineral stones embedded in a matrix of woven collagenfibre sticks determine the state and function of bones and teeth, with the minerals providing hardness and the collagen providing elasticity. Such conditions as bone pain, osteoporosis, and gum disease leading to tooth loss can all result from problems with these crucial sticks and stones. Learn how nature has harnessed the power of cells and calcium to create 鈥渂iorocks鈥 that strengthen your bones and teeth, and what you can do to keep them hard and healthy.

Marc D. McKee, BSc鈥82, MSc鈥84, PhD鈥87, is a professor in 六合彩开奖结果鈥檚 faculties of Dentistry and Medicine.
