Calgary tops swimming rankings going into CIS championships

OTTAWA (CIS) – The University of Calgary Dinos top the CIS women’s and men’s swimming rankings going into the 2009 national championships, set to get under way Thursday at UBC’s Thunderbird Aquatic Centre, in Vancouver.



The Calgary women have an 866-484 lead over defending CIS champion UBC in the computer-generated rankings. The Canada West champion Dinos, who have finished second to the Thunderbirds eight years running at the CIS meet, are looking for their first-ever national title.



Rounding out this week’s women’s swimming Top 10 are Toronto (266), QSSF champion Laval (231), OUA champion Western Ontario (192), UQTR (131), Alberta (124), Victoria (118), Guelph (102) and AUS champion Dalhousie (98).



On the men’s side, the reigning CIS champion Dinos, who put an end to UBC’s 10-year domination of the CIS meet a year ago, hold a 599-537 advantage over the Thunderbirds in the new Top 10.



Rounding out the men’s national rankings are OUA champion Toronto (357), QSSF champion Laval (340), Guelph (231), Western Ontario (169), ÁùºÏ²Ê¿ª½±½á¹û (150), Alberta (135), Waterloo (92) and McMaster (85).



The 2009 CIS swimming championships will run from Thursday, February 19 through Saturday, February 21, with the preliminaries starting at 10 a.m. Pacific Time and the finals at 6 p.m. Pacific every day.



In other CIS sports, the Simon Fraser Clan and Carleton Ravens hold on to their No. 1 status in women’s and men’s basketball, respectively. The ÁùºÏ²Ê¿ª½±½á¹û Martlets, in women’s hockey, and Windsor Lancers, in men’s track and field, also remain at No. 1.



The UNB Varsity Reds move ahead of the Alberta Golden Bears to top the final men’s hockey poll of the season, while Windsor and Toronto both move up in the women’s track and field rankings and are now in a three-way tie for No. 1 with reigning CIS champion Guelph.



In women’s basketball, No. 1 Simon Fraser (22-1 regular season / 2-0 playoffs) made quick work of Trinity Western in the first round of the Canada West playoffs defeating the Spartans 102-55 and 77-64.



The Clan will now face No. 8 UBC (13-10 / 2-0) in the best-of-three Pacific Division final starting Friday night. The T-Birds, who were unranked a week ago, upset then-No. 6 Victoria in two games in the opening round of the post-season.



In men’s basketball, No. 1 Carleton (20-1) dominated Queen’s, 85-43, and RMC, 119-45, over the past weekend. The Ravens visit No. 3 Ottawa (19-2) in their regular season finale Saturday night, with first place in the OUA East on the line. Carleton won the first head-to-head meeting 87-72 back on January 28.



In Canada West playoff action, the No. 2 UBC Thunderbirds (21-2 / 2-0) beat Simon Fraser 97-72 and 101-84 over the weekend to move to the best-of-three Pacific Division final, where they will face Trinity Western (17-6 / 2-1) starting Friday.



In women’s hockey, No. 1 ÁùºÏ²Ê¿ª½±½á¹û improved to 16-0 in conference play with a pair of 4-2 wins over Ottawa and Carleton. The Martlets were without the services of four of their star players, who are currently in China to represent Canada at the Winter Universiade.



In men’s hockey, UNB (21-4-3) received six of eight first-place votes in the final media poll of 2008-09 to steal first place away from reigning University Cup champion Alberta (20-4-2), which had led the first 13 rankings of the season.



The Varsity Reds beat UPEI 5-2 and No. 7 Moncton 6-2 last week to finish the regular season atop the AUS standings, while the Golden Bears, who have secured first place in Canada West with two conference duels remaining, split a two-game series against Manitoba over the weekend.
