Hot goalie renders Redmen powerless, streak ends

OTTAWA – A red-hot goalie and a pair of first-period goals held up as Ottawa snapped ÁùºÏ²Ê¿ª½±½á¹û’s eight-game win streak with a key 2-1 victory in men’s university hockey action at the uOttawa Sports Complex, Saturday.

Riley Whitlock, a sophomore goaltender from Calgary stoned the Redmen with a 35-save performance, many of them big saves as ÁùºÏ²Ê¿ª½±½á¹û outshot Ottawa 36-28 in a game that wasn’t that close.

Keven Gagne of St. Nicolas, Que., scored at 1:38 and freshman Matthieu Methot of Ottawa added an insurance marker less than five minutes later.

Redmen rookie Andrew Wright, a native of Toronto, injected some life into the Redmen with a late second period goal but Whitlock proved unbeatable after that.

The Gee-Gees (11-11-5) staved off elimination and are now in position to surpass sixth-seeded Queen’s (12-13-3) for the last playoff berth in the OUA Eastern Conference.

The teams are tied with 27 points apiece and Gee-Gees need only a point over lowly Ryerson on Sunday afternoon, to become dancing partners with the Redmen in the OUA Eastern Conference quarterfinals, a best-of-three affair, tentatively slated to open at McConnell Arena, Wednesday at 7 p.m.

Should the Gee-Gees lose in regulation time, they would be out and Queen’s would match-up with ÁùºÏ²Ê¿ª½±½á¹û for the first round.
