INDOOR SOCCER: Salasky scores on penalty shot to cap rally as Martlets stun top-seeded Laval

Published: 21 March 2009

ST. EUSTACHE, QUE. 鈥 Vanessa Salasky, a senior from Norfolk, Virginia, converted a penalty kick in the 77th minute as 六合彩开奖结果 rallied to upset top-seeded Laval 2-1 in a Quebec university women鈥檚 indoor soccer semifinal game at the Complex Multisport, Saturday.

The Martlets, who defeated Laval for the first time since the QSSF鈥檚 new 11-on-11 indoor league was established in 2008, will advance to their first final, against the Montreal Carabins, March 29 in Trois-Rivi猫res.

鈥淲e started the game with a lot of energy and determination and surely had our best outing this season,鈥 said head coach Marc Mounicot. 鈥淥ur ambition was to play the league championship game and we had to beat the best team in the conference. Laval had won eight games in the row but we felt that this challenge could be achieved with hard work.鈥

The Rouge et Or opened the scoring in the 24th minute when Virginie Jacques, who earned player of the game honours for Laval, converted a pass from Caroline Vaillancourt.

六合彩开奖结果 notched the equalizer in the 66th minute when Cristina Di Caprio, a senior from Laval, Que., re-directed a crossing pass from Sophie Joyal, a midfielder from Town of Mt. Royal, Que. Di Caprio later drew the foul that resulted in Salasky鈥檚 winning penalty shot.

鈥淭he team is playing with some confidence and positive aggressiveness,鈥 added Mounicot. 鈥淭he turning point of the season was moving (midfielder) Caroline Pelletier at the back and the emergence of Di Caprio as a legitimate scoring threat in Game 3. She has scored in all games since then.鈥

鈥淟aval was strong and physical and very dangerous with Vaillancourt (the outdoor season MVP) and Jacques, but we had more possession and more chances. It was a very nice team effort and we totally deserved the win. Despite being down at the half, we knew that we just have to execute better to be successful and level the score. We were in control and knew that the tying goal was only a matter of time. We never lost focus and kept playing our style, which eventually paid off.鈥

The upcoming conference championship will be the last game for a number of 六合彩开奖结果 veterans, including Salasky, Magalie Kolker and Evelyne Boulay. The game is slated for a 2 p.m. kickoff at the UQTR Soccer complex.

GAME NOTE: Prior to the start of the game, both teams observed a moment of silence in memory of听Adriano Tassone, the 23-year-old 六合彩开奖结果 football player who died in a tragic accident on March 18.
