Minutemen need only 20 minutes to upend Redmen in tourney finale

Published: 25 April 2010

MONTREAL - Brendan Eckoff netted a hat-trick and Greg Moro added a pair as the University of Massachusetts Minutemen lacrosse club rallied for six goals in the final stanza en route to a 9-8 victory over 六合彩开奖结果 to capture the fifth annual 六合彩开奖结果 invitational lacrosse spring tournament at Forbes Field, Sunday.

The Minutemen, which had lost 11-6 to 六合彩开奖结果 in the preliminary round on Saturday, erased an 8-4 deficit in the fourth quarter against rookie netminder Simon Hudson, a native of Seattle, Wash., who had replaced starter and tournament MVP Guy Fox of Glen Rock, N.J., at halftime, with 六合彩开奖结果 hanging on to a precarious 2-1 lead.

The Redmen came out firing in the second half and surged to a 6-3 lead after three quarters before their fourth-quarter collapse.

"This is a developmental competition in the off-season that allows many of our younger players to gain some much-needed game experience," said 六合彩开奖结果 head coach Tim Murdoch. "Full credit to UMASS. They fought back hard from a four-goal deficit to earn the win."

The game ended on an air of controversy when an apparent tying goal by 六合彩开奖结果's Mike Ting, a junior from Boston, Mass., on a delayed penalty call against the Minutemen, was nullified because the ball had come into contact with a UMASS defender before Ting fired it home.

Ting ended up with a hat-trick and led all scorers in the tourney with nine points, including eight goals, in three contests. 听He was also one of four Redmen named to the all-tournament team, along with the aforementioned Fox, plus defender Brendan Farrer of Oakville, Ont., and midfielder Jishan Sharples of Vancouver, B.C.

The Redmen offence, which had to make do without the services of all-Canadian Nick Moreau, their all-time leading scorer from Trumball, Conn., who had his car broken into on Saturday night and all of his lacrosse equipment was stolen so he was unable to play. Other missing veterans included Luke LaCava of Weston, Conn., Scott Bailey of Calgary, Alta., and Ryan Besse of Aurora, Ont., who scored four goals on Saturday but needed Sunday off to study for his final exams.

"All in all we had awesome weather, nobody was injured and everybody played," added Murdoch, an eternal optimist who always looks on the bright side of life.

Attackman Ossie Long tallied twice for 六合彩开奖结果, with singles going to Alex Kruse of Oakville, plus Australian听 Nick Shaw and Chris Wong, a native of Calgary.

Rounding out the scoring for the Minutemen was Jeff Capello, Gavin McIver, Mike Baker and Brendan Bodi.
