The free movie series, Neuro Movie Nights is back by popular demand with two fascinating but very different films. 听Starting on October 14, Neuro Movie Nights provides Montrealers with a unique opportunity to enjoy an alternative cinematic experience and to gain new perspectives on the mysteries and workings of the brain.

Young Frankenstein (1974) October 14, 2010
Critically reviewed as 鈥榯he funniest comedy of all time,鈥� Young Frankenstein is a zany parody that pays homage to the Frankenstein movies, staring the wonderful Gene Wilder and directed by comedic genius Mel Brooks. The novel, Frankenstein, published in 1818 tells a story of the simultaneous idealism and hubris of science.
In Young Frankenstein, a young neurosurgeon (Wilder) inherits the castle of his grandfather, the famous Dr. Victor von Frankenstein. In the castle he finds a funny hunchback called Igor, a pretty lab assistant named Inga and the old housekeeper, Frau Blucher. Young Frankenstein believes that the work of his grandfather is all a hoax, but when he discovers the book where the doctor described his reanimation experiment, he suddenly changes his mind...
Young Frankenstein will be hosted by neuroscientist Dr. Tim Kennedy whose research specializes in nerve cell development and repair 鈥� one of the great challenges in medicine.
Away From Her (2007) November 11 2010
A love story and a portrayal of the devastating effect of Alzheimer鈥檚 disease, Away From Her is a beautiful film based on a short story by Alice Munro, starring acclaimed actress Julie Christie and directed by the talented Sarah Polley.
The movie is a poignant and complex look at the effects of dementia on an individual, on her relationship with her husband, and on new relationships she forms after moving to a nursing home. It highlights both the tragic and redeeming aspects of loving a person suffering from an illness that erodes core aspects of 'self,鈥� including memory and personality, as so many neurological diseases do. 听The movie captures the complexity of relationships under these circumstances.
Away From Her will be hosted by neurologist Dr. Lesley Fellows who is witness to these struggles in her clinical work, and is often inspired and touched by how the bonds of love and family resist the sometimes very tragic effects of these illnesses.
