Stephen Lewis to deliver Phyllis Shapiro Memorial Lecture in Education

Stephen Lewis, former United Nations (UN) special envoy for HIV/AIDS in Africa, will deliver the second annual Phyllis Shapiro Memorial Lecture, 鈥淓ducation, The World鈥檚 Greatest Force for Good鈥 on Monday, March 19, Mount Royal Centre, 2200 Mansfield Street, at 5:30 p.m.

Mr. Lewis, internationally respected for his tireless work in bringing the scourge of AIDS in Africa to greater attention worldwide, will explore the ways in which education throughout the world transforms lives and is perhaps the greatest unacknowledged instrument for dramatic social change. Having recently completed his term as UN special envoy for HIV/AIDS in Africa, Mr. Lewis is the inaugural Scholar-in-Residence at the Institute on Globalization and the Human Condition at McMaster University in Hamilton. He is also a Senior Advisor to the Mailman School of Public Health at Columbia University in New York and the chair of the Stephen Lewis Foundation, which is dedicated to easing the pain of HIV/AIDS in Africa.

Established to honour the memory of Dr. Phyllis Shapiro, this annual lecture series highlights topics in the subject of education. The late wife of former 六合彩开奖结果 Principal Dr. Bernard Shapiro, Dr. Shapiro taught at the 六合彩开奖结果 Faculty of Education in the Department of Administration and Policy Studies, specializing in elementary school curriculum.
