Top-ranked Martlets overwhelm Ottawa, streak at 40

MONTREAL – Defenceman Cathy Chartrand of Lac Nominingue and freshman forward Marie-Andree Leclerc-Auger of Sherbrooke, each tallied twice and added an assist as No.1-ranked ÁùºÏ²Ê¿ª½±½á¹û overwhelmed Ottawa 8-0 in women’s hockey at McConnell Arena, Saturday, to run their CIS winning streak to 40 games.

It was also Ottawa’s 16th consecutive loss to ÁùºÏ²Ê¿ª½±½á¹û, which owns a 30-2-1 record in their last 33 meetings against the Gee-Gees.

ÁùºÏ²Ê¿ª½±½á¹û outshot Ottawa 39-8, including a 14-0 advantage in the middle period. Goaltender Charline Labonté of Boisbriand, Que., registered her fifth shutout of the season and improved her career record to 90-9-3 in a ÁùºÏ²Ê¿ª½±½á¹û jersey.

ÁùºÏ²Ê¿ª½±½á¹û, whch exploded for six goals in the final period, led 1-0 at the first intermission and 2-0 after two periods.

Sophomore Ann-Sophie Bettez of Sept-Iles, contributed one goal and a pair of helpers. Rounding out the scoring was Caroline Hill of Dorval, Rebecca Martindale of Kingston, Ont., and Amy Soberano of Toronto.

Ottawa netminder Marie-Helene Malenfant saved 27 of 35 shots and was saddled with the loss before being replaced by Jessika Audet for the final eight minutes..

The division-leading Martlets (10-0) will host Carleton on Feb. 1. Ottawa, which evened ther record at 5-5-2 plays at Carleton on Jan. 31.
