A landmark donation to support ÁùºÏ²Ê¿ª½±½á¹û’s renowned genomics research and education programs from UK-based alumnus and long-time donor Victor Dahdaleh is a catalyst for advancements in genomics research. Thanks to gifts from Victor Dahdaleh totalling more than $30 million, ÁùºÏ²Ê¿ª½±½á¹û will launch the Victor Phillip Dahdaleh Institute of Genomic Medicine.

Celeste Longhurst joined the Macdonald University Advancement Team early in the new year. In this position, she leads the AES fundraising campaign and manages the Faculty’s University Advancement team whose activities also include alumni relations.  Celeste hails from Toronto and has worked in philanthropy throughout her career, with a focus on fundraising for environmental organizations. She joined us from the National Wildlife Centre, where she was Director of Development, and has a Bachelor in Environmental Science from Queens University.

Six students from across Canada have been named recipients of the country’s largest undergraduate scholarship program, Schulich Leader Scholarships, and will begin their studies this September, in ÁùºÏ²Ê¿ª½±½á¹û’s bicentennial year.

Out of a pool of 350,000 potential candidates across Canada, 1,400 students were nominated. Given the unprecedented circumstances associated with the pandemic, for the second consecutive year, the Schulich Foundation awarded an additional 50 scholarships for a total of 100 in recognition of the challenges facing students and their families.

A $5-million gift from ÁùºÏ²Ê¿ª½±½á¹ûians G. Garvin Brown IV, BA’91, and his wife Steffanie Diamond Brown, will make a major contribution to research and teaching at ÁùºÏ²Ê¿ª½±½á¹û’s Max Bell School of Public Policy by establishing an endowed Chair in Democratic Studies. The Chair will promote further scholarship and public outreach, encourage public discussion of key challenges facing the world’s democracies, and contribute to evidence-based policy decision-making.

Dr. Richard Tomlinson made philanthropic history for Canadian universities in 2000 when he donated $64 million to ÁùºÏ²Ê¿ª½±½á¹û. At the time, it was the largest gift ever made in support of higher education in Canada by an alumnus, and still ranks as the largest single gift ÁùºÏ²Ê¿ª½±½á¹û has ever received from an individual.

A  $1-million gift from Macdonald College of ÁùºÏ²Ê¿ª½±½á¹û  alumnus  J. William Ritchie, BSc(Agr)'51,  will provide  major  support for ÁùºÏ²Ê¿ª½±½á¹û’s Faculty of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences in its efforts to open its Macdonald campus to more visitors and provide a unique, hands-on education into the critical role of agriculture in the food supply chain.
