This time, women are on the frontlines in Ukraine, making up between 10% and 15% of Ukraine’s armed forces, including, for the first time, combat forces[1]. Du Bois and Anti-Racist Education /continuingstudies/article/deans-corner-legacy-web-dubois-and-anti-racist-education
“Teach thinkers to think, – a needed knowledge in a day of loose and careless logic; and they whose lot is gravest must have the carefulest [sic] training to think aright.” In 1903, in a collection of essays, “The Souls of Black Folk”, American scholar and civil rights leader, W.E.B. Du Bois, sought to make sense of the ever more discriminatory and segregationist society in which he and other African-Americans found themselves. These words still ring true today, as we mark Black History Month, as well as the Lunar New Year, celebrated in Chinese and numerous other Asian cultures.
Wed, 02 Feb 2022 21:02:03 +0000 Carola Weil 11313 at /continuingstudies Welcoming 2022 as a Time for Renewal /continuingstudies/article/deans-corner-welcoming-2022-time-renewal
January! The start of a new calendar year! A time of new year’s resolutions and new beginnings…or so we all hoped. The latest variant of COVID-19, Omicron, has added some new twists and turns to our visions of renewal. And yet, there is much opportunity to reimagine, create, and drive forward our individual and collective visions of the future.
Thu, 13 Jan 2022 21:18:39 +0000 Carola Weil 11298 at /continuingstudies The Joys of Graduation – Roads Travelled to Make a Difference /continuingstudies/article/deans-corner-joys-graduation-roads-travelled-make-difference
Just recently, many of our learners celebrated their graduation from the School of Continuing Studies in person. While it was not quite the same experience as before the pandemic — and a much smaller group to ensure safety measures — the occasion filled me with great joy and pride for all that our community of learners, faculty, instructors, and staff had accomplished during these past years. I am so excited to think about what wonderous paths the future holds for you, for us!
Mon, 06 Dec 2021 15:38:42 +0000 Carola Weil 11281 at /continuingstudies The ϲʿ School of Continuing Studies Partners with the Translation Bureau of Canada to Prepare the Next Generation of Canada’s Legal Translators /continuingstudies/article/mcgill-school-continuing-studies-partners-translation-bureau-canada-prepare-next-generation-canadas
On July 15, 2021, the ϲʿ School of Continuing Studies and the Translation Bureau of Canada finalized an agreement that aims to reinforce standards of excellence in the field of translation and better prepare the next generation of legal translators in Canada.
Thu, 02 Sep 2021 18:58:15 +0000 David Kynan 10669 at /continuingstudies The Dean’s Corner: Finding Your Sense of Belonging in a Post-COVID World /continuingstudies/article/deans-corner-finding-your-sense-belonging-post-covid-world
The Oxford Dictionary defines the term “belonging” as “the feeling of being comfortable and happy in a particular situation or with a particular group of people.” Lately, I have been thinking a lot about this concept and how it relates to the School of Continuing Studies (SCS). Many typically think of continuing education as a means to an end; you learn in order to upskill, reskill, get a new job, or earn a promotion. But it is also so much more. Perhaps most importantly, continuing education is about a sense of belonging.
Wed, 01 Sep 2021 16:39:15 +0000 Carola Weil 10663 at /continuingstudies The Dean's Corner: The 3 “H”s of Summer – Health, Happiness and Healing /continuingstudies/article/deans-corner-3-hs-summer-health-happiness-and-healing
July 1st marked not only a holiday that is observed as Canada Day, but also my third anniversary in Canada, in Montreal and at ϲʿ. I arrived on the shores of the St. Lawrence River in midst of another heatwave and to the sounds of the Montreal Jazz Festival. This was not my first visit to the city, but one that stayed in my memory with exceptional clarity.
