Informed by her own experience in living with cerebral palsy, Gualtieri designed a prototype for the Universal Seating Apparatus, a portable device that allows people with disabilities to sit comfortably upright on airplanes.

Co-founded by Desautels alumnus Marc-Antoine Bonin (BCom’19) and Emeric Noël, Planned offers a unique tool for event planners to connect with a curated list of venues and suppliers in one place. This week, Planned announced that it had raised $4.7 million in venture financing led by Inovia Capital, with participation from Telegraph Hill Capital and N49P, bringing its total capital raised to $7 million.

In the words of Michel Kelly-Gagnon, CEO of the Montreal Economic Institute that awards the medal every year, “We look for individuals who are vocal in their defence of the free market,” and concludes that “This year’s winner is one hell of a fighter.”

The chain of events that culminated in the creation of Cult Yogourt began 15 years ago, when Montreal resident Adam Coape-Arnold drank unfiltered water during a stay at a coffee plantation in Costa Rica.”I got a parasite,” said Coape-Arnold. “It did a number on my gastrointestinal system. I lost my energy, my joie de vivre. I became lactose-intolerant. I never really got over it until I started taking probiotics.”

World Wide Hearing receives funding

After winning the ��ϲʿ�� Dobson Cup, World Wide Hearing received a $113,000 grant from Grand Challenges Canada to pilot its hearing aid delivery model, Hearing Express. In 2013-2014, the pilot project was run in Kraimeh, a rural community in Western Jordan, in collaboration with a new outreach centre for children with disabilities. Over the course of the project, Hearing Express female technicians visited Jordanian households and held hearing camps to provide affordable hearing aids to people who need them, validating the model.

On March 11, Alexis Ohanian, the co-founder Reddit, paid a visit to the Desautels Faculty of Management during one of the last stops of his North American tour to promote his book, “Without Their Permission.” The book describes how he started the front page of the internet from scratch with his partner Steve Huffman. “Everyone has great ideas. No one wakes you up in the middle of the night to say ‘I have a terrible idea.’ We all have great ideas. The difference is, the barrier to entry for us is as low as a laptop and time and an internet connection.
