Yet often there simply isn’t enough infrastructure to go around, creating a major barrier to success. In 2016, the vehicle sharing company Car2Go sold off its fleet of EVs in San Diego largely because the city’s charging infrastructure couldn’t keep pace with demand. Or so it seemed. With too many vehicles being dropped off at a few charging points in high-use areas, delays grew.
Wed, 16 Jun 2021 20:37:43 +0000 julie.lapalme@affiliate.mcgill.ca 80915 at /desautels Wei Qi awarded 2019 NSERC Discovery Grant /desautels/channels/news/wei-qi-awarded-2019-nserc-discovery-grant-298922
Congratulations to Wei Qi, Assistant Professor in Operations Management, awarded 2019 NSERC Discovery Grant “Towards a Smart-City Future: Urban-Scale Integration of Mobility and Energy Systems”.
Fri, 26 Jul 2019 17:49:45 +0000 angela.l.williams@mcgill.ca 74667 at /desautels Wei Qi awarded 2019 FRQSC New Academics Grant /desautels/channels/news/wei-qi-awarded-2019-frqsc-new-academics-grant-298920
Congratulations to Wei Qi, Assistant Professor in Operations Management, awarded the 2019 FRQSC New Academics Grant (Soutien à la recherche pour la relève professorale) “Le partage de la mobilité durable dans les villes intelligentes” (“Sharing Sustainable Mobility in Smart Cities”).
Fri, 26 Jul 2019 17:41:05 +0000 angela.l.williams@mcgill.ca 74665 at /desautels A Smart-City Scope of Operations Management /desautels/channels/news/smart-city-scope-operations-management-289480
Authors: Wei Qi and Zuo-Jun Max Shen

Publication: Production and Operations Management, Forthcoming

Abstract:

We are entering an era of great expectations towards our cities. The vision of “smart city” has been pursued worldwide to transform urban habitats into superior efficiency, quality and sustainability. This phenomenon prompts us to ponder what role the scholars in operations management (OM) can assume. In this essay, we express our initial thoughts on expanding OM to the smart-city scope. We review smart-city initiatives of governments, industry, national laboratories and academia. We argue that the smart-city movement will transition from the tech-oriented stage to the decision-oriented stage. Hence, a smart city can be perceived as a system scope within which planning and operational decisions are orchestrated at the urban scale, reflective of multidimensional needs, and adaptive to massive data and innovation. The benefits of studying smart-city OM are manifold and significant: contributing to deeper understanding of smart cities by providing advanced analytical frameworks, pushing OM knowledge boundaries (such as data-driven decision making), and empowering the OM community to deliver much broader impacts than before. We discuss several research opportunities to embody these thoughts, in the interconnected contexts of smart buildings, smart grid, smart mobility and new retail. These opportunities arise from the increasing integration of systems and business models at the urban scale.

Mon, 10 Sep 2018 19:59:05 +0000 angela.l.williams@mcgill.ca 73155 at /desautels Shared Mobility for Last-Mile Delivery: Design, Operational Prescriptions and Environmental Impact /desautels/channels/news/shared-mobility-last-mile-delivery-design-operational-prescriptions-and-environmental-impact-286309
Authors: Wei Qi, Lefei Li, Sheng Liu, Zuo-Jun Max Shen

Publication: Manufacturing & Service Operations Management, Vol. 20, No. 4, Fall 2018

Abstract:
Thu, 29 Mar 2018 18:08:19 +0000 julie.lapalme@mcgill.ca 68568 at /desautels Sharing demand-side energy resources - A conceptual design /desautels/channels/news/sharing-demand-side-energy-resources-conceptual-design-286298
Authors: Wei Qi, Bo Shen, Hongcai Zhang, Zuo-Jun Max Shen

Publication: Energy, Vol. 135, September 2017

Abstract:
Thu, 29 Mar 2018 16:39:14 +0000 thao.nguyen3@mail.mcgill.ca 68562 at /desautels Prof Wei Qi wins INFORMS Chuck ReVelle Rising Star Award 2021 /desautels/channels/news/prof-wei-qi-wins-informs-chuck-revelle-rising-star-award-2021-335738
Congratulations to Wei Qi, Associate Professor in Operations Management, Winner of the INFORMS Chuck ReVelle Rising Star Award 2021
Sun, 19 Dec 2021 22:13:17 +0000 angela.l.williams@mcgill.ca 85593 at /desautels Crowdshipping could be answer to delivery delays as e-commerce soars /desautels/channels/news/crowdshipping-could-be-answer-delivery-delays-e-commerce-soars-327633
The sharp rise in e-commerce during the COVID-19 pandemic has strained the ability of Canada Post and private couriers alike to keep up with demand.
Wed, 13 Jan 2021 14:33:16 +0000 julie.lapalme@affiliate.mcgill.ca 78002 at /desautels 2020 Virtual Smart-City Operations and Analytics Conference /desautels/channels/event/2020-virtual-smart-city-operations-and-analytics-conference-321125
The Smart-City Operations and Analytics Conference will take place virtually on Tuesday, October 20, 2
Thu, 12 Mar 2020 13:29:29 +0000 angela.l.williams@mcgill.ca 75599 at /desautels Desautels professors celebrated for their teaching excellence /desautels/channels/news/desautels-professors-celebrated-their-teaching-excellence-323094
Congratulations to Sebastien Betermier, Professor of Finance, and Wei Qi, Professor of Operations Management, who were honoured at ϲʿ’s Management Convocation ceremony for their excellence in teaching.
Thu, 02 Jul 2020 16:54:51 +0000 angela.l.williams@mcgill.ca 76129 at /desautels
