Title:

Life Skills Development and Physical Activity among Adolescent Indigenous Australians: Evaluating the Impact of a Community and School Based Sport-Program and Service Learning Intervention

Abstract:

This presentation outlines the results from two separate studies conducted with urban Indigenous youth. The first study examined the effect of a community and school sport program (Sporting Chance Program [SCP]) on Indigenous adolescents’ life skill development and physical activity levels within program sessions. A secondary aim was to determine the acceptability of SCP. The second study investigated the effects of a community and school-based service learning experience (SLE) on preservice physical education (PE) teachers' Indigenous knowledge, cultural competency and pedagogy. Research strategies, findings and implications will be discussed as well as recommendations for future research with Indigenous adolescents.
