Microbiology (M.Sc.)

Program Description

The Master of Science (M.Sc.) in Microbiology (Thesis) offered by the Department of Natural Resource Sciences in the Faculty of Agricultural & Environmental Sciences is a research-intensive program that emphasizes comprehensive and innovative learning opportunities. The program's objective is to equip students with skills in information literacy, research design, and scientific communication to either continue their studies or pursue professional opportunities.

Keywords: Microbial ecology, microbial diversity, bioremediation, infections, antibiotics, bacterial physiology, bacterial genetics and genomics, bioinformatics.

Unique Program Features

  • Learning activities cover a variety of basic and applied environmental sciences topics including microbiology (generally with an environmental leaning), microbial genetics, physiology, ecology and plant-microbe interactions;
  • Some Faculty members conduct research on the use of microorganisms for biodegradation and bioremediation of contaminated sites. Recently, some started examining Earth-based systems as models of extraterrestrial ones in the emerging field of Astrobiology;
  • The Department is affiliated with the Lyman Entomological Museum and Research Laboratory, the Molson Nature Reserve, the Morgan Arboretum, and the Ecomuseum of the St. Lawrence Valley Natural History Society.

University-Level Admission Requirements

  • An eligible Bachelor's degree with a minimum 3.0 GPA out of a possible 4.0 GPA
  • English-language proficiency
