The Schulich School of Music of ��ϲʿ�� is pleased to announce that applications are open for the third edition of the Graham Sommer Competition for Young Composers (GSC).

Interested Canadian composers under the age of 35 (born after August 15, 1989), are invited to submit three original works (each 3-15 minutes long) by August 15, 2024, at 12:00 PM (noon) EST.

The Graham Sommer Competition is proud to announce that Matthew Ricketts is the grand prize winner of the second edition of the  Graham Sommer Competition for Young Composers. The $18,000 first prize for Matthew’s new work for piano trio, “Still There,” was among $54,000 in total prize earnings awarded at the Concert and Prize Gala on Sunday, September 26 at Pollack Hall. MONTREAL, QUEBEC, July 31, 2020 - In light of the COVID-19 pandemic and with the health and well-being of the composers, musicians, jury, and audience in mind, the 2020 edition of the Graham Sommer Competition for Young Composers (GSC) has been postponed until September 2021.

Dr. Graham Sommer’s intention for this competition was to create works with the potential to connect with the concert-going public, and we are confident that this decision supports his vision.

David Jaeger on the role of public radio in promoting Canadian composers

David Jager is a composer, producer and broadcaster based in Toronto. He was recently named a Member of the Order of Canada "for being at the forefront of Canadian music creation, performance and promotion, notably through his broadcasts, and for having fostered a generation of musicians."

In a WholeNote article published at the end of August, he reflects on the role of the CBC in fostering young compositional talent in Canada and the importance of the nation's ongoing investment in young composers.

Finalists selected for inaugural Graham Sommer Competition for Young Composers

The Schulich School of Music is pleased to announce the five finalists for the inaugural edition of the Graham Sommer Competition for Young Composers. This new national competition for Canadian composers under the age of 35 was founded by Dr. Graham Sommer, MDCM’72, (1946-2016), a graduate of ��ϲʿ��’s Faculty of Medicine and an accomplished pianist and devoted music lover. In this first edition of the competition, five finalists are to compose works for piano quintet (piano and string quartet) which will be judged in front of a live panel.

The late Dr. Graham Sommer, an alumnus of ��ϲʿ��’s Faculty of Medicine as well as an accomplished pianist and ardent music lover, made a gift to create a biennial competition for young Canadian composers, with a focus on chamber music.

The Schulich School of Music is pleased to announce the prestigious jury for the inaugural edition of the Graham Sommer Competition for Young Composers. The new national competition for Canadian composers under the age of 35 is the gift of the late Dr. Graham Sommer, an alumnus of ��ϲʿ��’s Faculty of Medicine and an accomplished pianist and devoted music lover. Five composers will be chosen to create new works for piano quintet, earning prizes ranging from $5,000-$15,000 as well as a concert premiere at the Schulich School of Music on September 29, 2018.
