The goal of this talk is to honour the legacy of Norval Morrisseau, an influential Anishinaabe artist. Scots-Lakota scholar, Carmen Robertson holds the Tier I Canada Research Chair in North American Indigenous Visual and Material Culture at Carleton University in Ottawa. She has been leading a scholarly investigation into Norval Morrisseau鈥檚 output and his legacy in light of several authenticity claims. Robert Spade (Keeshigooninii) is an Anishinabe (Ojibwe) artist-educator from Northern Ontario (Obuckimaakang). Spade is a professor in the Schulich School of Music at 六合彩开奖结果, where he teaches courses related to Indigenous music.鈥疕e will speak about his art practice and Norval Morrisseau鈥檚 influence on his art and in his community.聽

Carmen Robertson聽聽

Talk title: Visiting and the Art of Norval Morriseau聽

Biography: Scots-Lakota scholar, Carmen Robertson holds the Tier I Canada Research Chair in North American Indigenous Visual and Material Culture at Carleton University in Ottawa. Within the areas of Indigenous art history, curatorial engagement, Indigenous visual and media culture, Robertson has developed ongoing collaborative and consultative projects. Since 2009 she has worked on aspects of a comprehensive study of the art and life of Anishinaabe artist Norval Morrisseau and in 2016 she published Mythologizing Norval Morrisseau: Art and the Colonial Narrative in the Canadian Media (UMP) and Norval Morrisseau Art and Life (ACI). She leads a team of fourteen researchers carrying out an exhaustive study of Morrisseau鈥檚 art from 1955 to 1985, the first of its kind for an Indigenous artist in Canada. She recently co-edited Bead Talk: Indigenous Aesthetics on the Flatlands in 2024.聽聽

Talk title: Reflecting on Three Decades of My Art as an Ojibweinini聽

Biography: Robert Spade (Keeshigooninii) is an Anishinabe (Ojibwe) artist-educator from Northern Ontario (Obuckimaakang). Rob is a father, husband, artist, sundancer, teacher (Sturgeon Clan), drum keeper and has over 20 years of experience delivering cultural and arts-based education, counseling and support, cultural sensitivity training, and cultural-arts-based therapy to Indigenous and non-students from primary school to university. Rob has spent over half his life living and working out on the land in his traditional territory learning teachings and stories, ceremonies, traditional skills and art from his Elders. He is a gifted and accomplished storyteller, men鈥檚 traditional dancer, drummer, singer, and visual artist who has worked with Indigenous and non-Indigenous organizations across Canada including Laurentian University, University of Victoria, Sudbury District Catholic School Board, Royal Conservatory of Music, Tourism Kingston, APTN, Ontario Arts Council, Royal BC Museum and Queen鈥檚 University.
