Desautels undergraduate student Sydney Kalyn achieved the gold level of the Duke of Edinburgh award, which recognizes personal development and community involvement among today鈥檚 youth.

Recipients of the international award must demonstrate excellence in a variety of areas, including: skill, physical fitness, service, placement, volunteering, adventurous journey, and educational pursuit.

Kalyn was among a group of 150 young adults who received their award on September 24 in the presence of Prince Harry.

While looking into supplements as part of her treatment for breast cancer, Monica Ruffo (BCom鈥86) realized something was amiss. 鈥淚 couldn鈥檛 actually understand what was written on the labels,鈥 Ruffo says. Further research uncovered a lack of legal framework surrounding the use of the word 鈥渘atural鈥 in Canada and the U.S., and that most supplements labelled so are hardly natural at all. In an interview for Flare Magazine, Toronto-based Shereen Ladha (BCom鈥10) talks about finding success both as a brand strategist and as a busy Bollywood dancer in movies, Netflix shows, on Canada鈥檚 Got Talent and since 2014, on her own YouTube channel.

Ms Ladha says that the moment she realized that she could indeed balance her day job and her side hustle was when she left work late one night to go to a video shoot for which she鈥檇 hired dancers. She worked through the stress, and the video ended up going viral.

Nour Hadidi (BCom鈥10) is a comedian and TV writer who grew up in a family of doctors, earned a BCom, and spent a half-decade as a financial analyst before leaving Montreal for the comedy stages of Toronto.

TerraCycle Marketing Manager Jessica Panetta (BCom鈥16) recently appeared on Toronto鈥檚 Breakfast Television to talk about recycling 鈥渘on-recyclable鈥 waste, specifically used cigarette butts.

TerraCycle collects them, composts the tobacco and the paper, then recycles the plastic filters. Members can package their used butts in a TerraCycle box and send them in via an included UPS label, but that is not the only solution: the company has collection receptacles on street corners in several Canadian cities.
