Black Candidate Pathway

Historically, Black peoples have been excluded from healthcare professions including dental medicine. The Faculty of Dental Medicine and Oral Health Sciences seeks to increase the representation of Black applicants admitted to its Doctor of Dental Medicine program (DMD). To establish equitable processes that show we welcome students identifying as Black, the Black Candidate pathway was created to facilitate the admission of qualified Black students. This pathway aligns with the Faculty of Dental Medicine and Oral Health Sciences' 5-Year Strategic Plan in relation to equity, diversity and inclusion, and ÁùºÏ²Ê¿ª½±½á¹û's Action Plans to Address Anti-Black Racism.

There is no limit in the number of seats for admission through this pathway. All candidates who apply will be simultaneously considered in the general CEGEP cohort and may receive an invitation to interview through either pathway.

As the Faculty does not have a separate applicant category for Black students, we encourage all applicants who self-identify as Black to notify the ÁùºÏ²Ê¿ª½±½á¹û Office by sending an email to indicate they wish to apply to the DMD program through the Black Candidate pathway. This will allow their application to be evaluated through the selection process of this pathway, with their consent. Self-identification and participation in this pathway are optional and in no way will negatively impact the admission decision.

Requirements

  • Be recognized as a resident of Quebec
  • Self-identify as Black
  • Have a R-score of 34.0 or higher
  • Meet all the academic and non-academic requirements for admission to the Dent-P Year
  • Submit your application by March 1 and required supporting documents by March 3

Required documentation

Candidates who self-declare as Black will be required to submit by the March 3 deadline a personal statement to contextualize their life experiences. An email must be sent to the ÁùºÏ²Ê¿ª½±½á¹û Office by March 1 at the latest indicating their interest in being considered through the Black Candidate pathway. A checklist item will then be added to their Slate account allowing them to upload their personal statement.

Selection process

The personal statements will be assessed by Black community members and health care professional admissions file reviewers. The candidates endorsed by the file reviewers will proceed to the Multiple Mini-Interviews (MMI). The offers of admission will be based on their performance during the MMIs within the Quebec resident cohort.
