Interfaculty Transfers

Interested in Transferring?

Before applying you must consider the following:

  • Programs are competitive and space is limitedÌýdue to space constraints. Only a very limited number (0 to 10) of inter/intra faculty transfer applicants are accepted. Ensure to have a backup plan if your request is refused.
  • Did you diligently research the program you are interested in? You can do so by visiting the eCalendar , curriculums and program flyers.
  • Have you considered a minor ¾±²Ô²õ³Ù±ð²¹»å?Ìý
  • If accepted, grades for ÁùºÏ²Ê¿ª½±½á¹û courses for which are required/equivalent in your new degree will be granted and carry forward, calculating in your CGPA (cumulative grade point average) in the Faculty of Engineering; all other grades will be excluded from CGPA.
  • Before making a request to transfer and to better understand your future career plans, we recommend you meet with a career advisor.

Important notes for students interested in Co-op Software Engineering

  • Diligently research the program by visiting the curriculum and eCalendar as you must be aware there are 4 mandatory Co-op work terms.
  • Meet with a career advisor to discuss your future career plans and the possibility of internships in your current program.
  • Have you considered a minor instead? Available minors include Software Engineering, Computer Science.
  • Transferring from another program will put you out of sync with the curriculum, and it may take longer to finish your degree.
  • If accepted into the program, Co-op work terms are to be taken prior to your term of graduation – no exceptions.
  • For specific questions about the Co-op program, you can also meet with an or .
  • Program is very competitive and space is limited.

Application Dates

Winter: Closed
Fall: April 15 to May 15Ìý(late requests will not be accepted)

Students in other faculty programs who would like to change their program are invited to apply as an inter-faculty transfer using the Minerva Faculty Transfer/Readmission electronic application.

Minimum Requirements

While many applicants may meet the minimum requirements for a program transfer, there is limited enrolment/space in undergraduate degree programs in the Faculty of Engineering. Therefore, in order to ensure a transparent and equitable evaluation of each application, the following conditions are considered in the selection process:

  • One semester of differential calculus
  • One semester of integral calculus
  • One semester of linear algebra
  • Two semesters of physics (mechanics, electricity and magnetism, waves and optics) with labs
  • Two semesters of general Chemistry with labs

Preference will be given to students who have completed the degree’s Year 0 freshman science courses.

  • A minimum of twoÌýcompleted terms of study at ÁùºÏ²Ê¿ª½±½á¹û is required in order to be considered for a transfer to an undergraduate program in the faculty.
  • A minimum CGPA based on ÁùºÏ²Ê¿ª½±½á¹û courses is required to apply:
    -Ìý 3.0 CGPA for the programs offered in the Department of Mining and Materials;
-Ìý 3.5ÌýCGPA for the programs offered in all other departments.
  • A minimum of 27 ÁùºÏ²Ê¿ª½±½á¹û graded credits (does not include S/U grades and does not include transfer credits) must be completed at the end of the current academic year (Fall and Winter terms)Ìýwhere it is highly recommended that one term comprises of 15 credits.

Offers for program transfer will be made to students based on CGPA relative to the list of qualified applicants.

All results are taken into consideration in determining transfer offers, including failed or repeated courses. Admission is competitive and the minimum CGPA requirement does not guarantee acceptance.

Course planning/scheduling

Consider registering for courses that may be equivalent to the program you are considering transferring to. Please consult further with a departmental advisor about course equivalencies

While you are not an Engineering student, you will not be permitted to take Engineering Administered courses such as; (to name a few).

FACC 100, 300, 400
MATH 262, 263, 264
WCOM 206

You must plan your course schedule for the upcoming year in line with the program you are currently registered in as there is not a guarantee of getting into your program of choice.

CGPA CUT-OFFS

As a guideline, we have listed the lowest CGPA scores admitted to inter- and intrafaculty transfers over the last five years. These are historical values and do not necessarily reflect the CGPA that will be required for future transfers.

CGPA cut-offs can fluctuate up or down from one year to the next.

How to apply for a Program Transfer or Readmission

A maximum of two program choices (e.g. Mechanical, Electrical; Civil) are permitted per application period. Students should enter their first and second preference.

  1. Login to using your ÁùºÏ²Ê¿ª½±½á¹û ID and PIN.
  2. Select the Student Menu.
  3. Select the Student Records Menu.
  4. Select Faculty Transfers / Readmission Menu.
  5. Follow the steps on the menu screen to proceed with the application you desire: Inter-Faculty Transfer, Intra-Faculty Transfer, or Readmission.

NOTE:

Students applying to Architecture will be evaluated by the School of Architecture and should email luciana.adoyo [at] mcgill.ca (Luciana Adoyo), Student Adviser, School of Architecture regarding submission of their application and architecture portfolio.

Application Status and Decision

Students are required to verify on Minerva the status of their application often to determine whether any additional information is required and respond promptly.

Applications that remain incomplete two weeks following the application deadline will be refused.

Decisions will be processed anytime between mid-June up until end of July. Students will receive an email notification when their status changes. Following a Faculty Approved status, it is mandatory that the student accept or decline the offer on the Minerva application. This must be done within two weeks of the change of status to avoid cancellation of the offer.

Accepted students are to read the letter of offer carefully as there may be further steps to complete before registration may begin.

Where an offer has been accepted, the student’s record will reflect the new program within a few days of acceptance. By deciding on your offer sooner, your record and program change will become in effect quicker, and it will also give you enough time to discuss course scheduling with your departmental advisor and register for the upcoming terms. Once the new program appears on Minerva, the student may begin registering in the courses applicable to the new program.

If accepted as an interfaculty transfer, grades for ÁùºÏ²Ê¿ª½±½á¹û courses for which are required/equivalent in your new degree will be granted and carry forward, calculating in your CGPA (cumulative grade point average) in the Faculty of Engineering; all other grades will be excluded from CGPA.

New Program Advising and Inquiries

Academic advising is MANDATORY in the Faculty of Engineering.

The letter of offer on Minerva provides information to students on when to attend their departmental advising session.

If you have more questions about transferring programs or readmission, you can either book an appointment or send an transfer.engineering [at] mcgill.ca (email).
