Minimum Stipend

Overview: Full-time MSc-Thesis and PhD graduate students in the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences will receive funding to support for their living expenses, tuition and fees. A student’s funding may come from a combination of sources including, but not limited to, the supervisor’s research funds, Graduate Excellence Funds, Differential Fee Waivers, and scholarships awarded to the student. Travel and presentation awards do not contribute to the minimum funding package.

QC = Quebec; OOP = out of province Canadians/Permanent Residents, INTL = international; CDN = Canadians/ Permanent Residents.

A higher contribution to the stipend can be provided by the supervisor considering the excellence/potential of the newly recruited student or the progress of the student into the graduate program.Ìý

* Tuition, fees and insurance calculated as per ÁùºÏ²Ê¿ª½±½á¹û’s fee calculator and expected to increase by 2-4% annually. MSc2 tuition calculated based on a September 2021 start date (i.e. 1 residency term and 2 additional session terms (Winter and Summer). PhD tuition and fees calculated based on a September start date. For students with January start dates, their fee schedule in PhD5 will be a hybrid of PhD4/PhD5.

Departmental Fellowships

The Department of Microbiology & Immunology receives an allocation from the Faculty of Medicine for Graduate Excellence Fellowships (GEFs). The MIMM Department also receives endowments bequeathed to ÁùºÏ²Ê¿ª½±½á¹û by the late Dr. Francis Charles Harrison (1870-1952) and the late Dr. Jacob Rozanis.Ìý Dr. Rozanis received his Ph.D. at ÁùºÏ²Ê¿ª½±½á¹û in 1967.Ìý These funds are to be used for graduate student fellowships.

Departmental fellowships are top-ups and cannot be used to decrease the minimum contribution from the supervisor to the stipend. They are given in full to the student.

Students will receive the award remuneration in one installment. The amount of the award will be paid via direct deposit into the student’s bank account. Students starting the program in the Winter or Summer terms will only receive the award in the following Fall term.

Merit Fellowships

Merit Fellowships are available to Ph.D. 5 and Ph.D. 6 students registered full-time for the coming academic year. The number and amount of the fellowships will depend on the amount of funds available.

Eligibility & Evaluation:

  • Only for Ph.D. 5 and Ph.D. 6 students registered full-time for the coming academic year.
  • Fellowships will be awarded on the basis of:
  • Demonstrated aptitude for research
  • Academic achievement

The GREAT and WARES Travel Award

The GREAT and WARES Travel Award is open to graduate studentsÌýto attendÌýconferences and scholarly meetings. Please note that only ONE award will be granted per student per year(Part 1, 2, 3).

To apply:

Fill out the PDF icon application form. A completed form that is signed by the supervisor must be submitted to the Student Affairs Administrator via E-mail, before the deadlines specified below.

Application deadlines:

  • August 1stÌýfor conference/scholarly meetings held between September 1st with a conference end date no later than December 31st. Expense report deadline: January 7th (PART 1)
  • December 1stÌýfor conference/scholarly meetings held between January 1st with a conference end date no later than April 30th. Expense report deadline: May 7th (PART 2)
  • April 1st for conference/scholarly meetings held between May 1st with a conference end date no later than August 31st. Expense report deadline: September 7th (PART 3)

The Graduate Research Day Awards

The department of Microbiology and Immunology organizes an annual Graduate Student Research Day. This is a great opportunity for all graduate students both M.Sc. & Ph.D. to participate and to present their research in an oral and poster presentations. Awards’ amounts for the best presentations and posters range between $200 to $250 each. Notices regarding the deadline to submit abstracts are posted on the departmental website and are circulated by email to all graduate students.

The Wilfred Yaphe Awards

The Award is established in the memory of Dr. Wilfred Yaphe, Professor in the Department of Microbiology and Immunology at ÁùºÏ²Ê¿ª½±½á¹û from 1966 until his untimely death in May 1986.Ìý The amount of these awards range from $250.00 to $450.00 and will be granted each year, upon recommendation of the Graduate Committee of the Department of Microbiology and Immunology, to two M.Sc. students and two Ph.D. students in the department who received the highest grade in the Final Graduate Student Seminar.

Internal Studentships are open to highly qualified Faculty of Medicine graduate students who are registered full-time in a research training program leading to an M.Sc. or Ph.D. degree. For more information, click here.

External Funding

All prospective students, both Canadian and International are encouraged to apply for external funding. This includes fellowships and awards allocated by government departments and agencies, and foundations. Graduate students in our program can often apply for scholarships to external agencies, such as NSERC,ÌýCIHR, or Vanier. Teaching Assistantships
