Supporting Documents to Upload by Applicant

Social Work Written Submission (single Word document or PDF uploaded on Minerva under the checklist item "Social Work Written Submission"), which includes the following sixÌýdistinct items:

  • Optional Equity Group Information
  • Education
  • French Proficiency (self-rated)
  • Relevant Experience:ÌýUse this section of the form. Do not submit any other CV form.ÌýWe want to know about your experiences that you consider ‘related’ and ‘relevant’ to social work. In chronological order, beginning with the most recent entry, provide an accurate and thorough description of social work-related paid (P), volunteer (V), or field placement (FP) experience. For each entry, identify the beginning and ending dates with month and year. You must accurately report the total number of hours for each entry in the work experience section.
  • Personal Statement: Single-spaced and not more than 600Ìýwords (word count required by applicant). Please describe why you are interested in becoming a social worker and how aspects of your own identity and/or your past experiences (personal, academic, volunteer and/or work) have contributed to your interest in social work. Reflect on what you have learned from these past experiences that make you a good candidate for social work. If you have worked in other disciplines, please discuss the reasons for this change.
  • Analysis of a Social Problem: Single-spaced and not more than 600Ìýwords (word count required by applicant). Please present your analysis of a social problem as follows: Building on your personal statement, identify a relevant social issue. Discuss what you consider to be some of the contributing factors to this social issue and why you think this social issue is relevant to the profession of social work. Reflect on the attributes, skills, and values you possess that contribute to your abilities to address this social issue and the attributes, skills, and values you would like to develop to strengthen your ability to address this social issue.

Supporting Documents to SendÌýby Email

Two Letters of Reference from individuals who have direct knowledge of your performance in a helping capacity or your potential in the field of social work.ÌýThese letters must be signed, on letterhead, and submitted electronically by referees.

FOR CEGEP, UNIVERSITY TRANSFER (INCLUDING McGILL GRADUATES), MATURE, FRENCH/INT’L BACCALAUREATE, letters of reference are submitted to officialschooldocs [at] mcgill.ca with the email Subject: BSW Reference letter, student last name, referee last name.

Referees should address:

  • How long and in what capacity has the referee known you?
  • What were your responsibilities or roles as delineated by the referee?
  • What are your strengths and limitations in a professional program in social work from the referee’s perspective?

Admission DecisionsÌý& Advising Session

The School of Social Work only reviews complete applications received on or before the stated deadline. The School of Social Work does not communicate admission decisions. Applicants are asked to check Minerva regularly for status notifications. Applicants are asked to accept or decline the offer of admission through Minerva. A mandatory advising session will be held in June.
